Stunt Rock has a new release: Regret Instruction Manual Issue 03

Stunt Rock (Billy Flegal) makes sample-based, kind-of breakcore, infused with an overwhelming sense of self-deprecation, channeled through fuck-it-all humor. He manages to have a complete disregard for what anyone thinks about him, while simultaneously being obsessed with it to the point of being suicidal (no joke, he makes constant reference to wanting to commit suicide).

Back when he still played shows, he would tell jokes and rants between his spastic, movie-sample ridden hardcore tracks. (NB: He and Venetian Snares did a split years ago.) He actually has a great stage presence and is outwardly very confident, precisely because he has no confidence in himself whatsoever and couldn't care less about anything. I guess when you have nothing to lose, you actually become more self-assured than ever.

Still, his jokes are constantly self-deprecating. He seems to think he's a pretty worthless person, which is obviously unfortunate because of the psychological damage it's surely caused him. On the other hand, it's clear that regret, depression, anger, and disappointment fuel his excellent creative output.

How To Be a Noise Artist

How To Be a Noise Artist

The first thing to remember about being a noise musician is this: you are not making music, you are creating a product. Memorize this dictum, as everything else follows.

Your Name
Your name is what introduces you as an artist. It's the first thing people will remember about you, and if you're like most noise artists, it's probably the only thing people will remember about you. The golden rule is to choose a name that says: If you like all the other guys, you'll like me. The best way to accomplish this is to simply take two vaguely provocative words and string them together (the truly creative will combine them into one word). There are really only two acceptable subjects for noise artists - destruction (death especially) and technology - so be sure to keep your thesaurus handy.

Alternately, and especially if you're a Dark Ambient artist, you can choose a name that sounds vaguely like it's in a foreign language but isn't. German is best for this, although any Old World language is just fine; Harsh Noise artists will naturally gravitate to Japanese. This follows from the undeniable truism that all Americans have bad taste in everything.

Your Gear
Remember, your music is entirely determined by the gear that you own. There are generally three categories of noise setups: Piles of Junk, Harsh Noise, and Everything Else.

Piles of Junk artists (I really couldn't think of anything else to call them) only need two things: a huge collection of contact mics, and an account at the local junkyard. Buy something made of metal, put a contact mic on it, and then destroy it. Don't worry about how it actually sounds - your performance will be eye-catching, so people will remember it and want to buy more of your shit. Remember: you're not making music, you're creating a product.

Harsh Noise artists should use pedals. And more pedals. And nothing but pedals. Perhaps you might want to use some sort of "playback" device - a turntable, CD player, MiniDisc, 4-track, or (oh, joy!) reel-to-reel tape device - but that's not strictly necessary, and you should never use more than one, ever. When choosing pedals, you should always try to make everything analog - even the delays. Don't bother to try them out, just buy them according to how cool they look. And if you can afford that rare hand-built custom-designed flanger from 1975, buy it immediately, even if it sounds worse than that Arion pedal that you can buy for twenty bucks from Guitar Center. Remember, your gear determines your music, so if you've got a pedal that nobody else has, your music must be better, right?

If you're in the Everything Else catagory (e.g. Power Electronics, Dark Ambient, etc) you should always buy outlandishly expensive synths and gear, and then try your damndest to make them sound exactly like a mound of cheap pedals. Analog synths should be used whenever possible, even if they only have one oscillator and the filter is broken. And remember: If you're not spending more on equipment than you are on rent, you're doing something wrong.

Also, nobody should use anything other than Behringer mixers. Ever.

Your Music
There is only one way to make noise: plug everything into everything else, then crank up the volume all the way. Remember that the quality of your music is directly proportional to the amount of knobs you turn. Don't worry about how it sounds - since there's no way to tell "good" noise from "bad" noise, the logical conclusion is that all noise is "good" noise. You don't have to be any good; as long as it's loud, you're an artistic genius. (Hey, that's probably why you started playing noise in the first place, right?)

If you're going to use vocals, the lyrics should always be utterly indecipherable - feedback is a plus. There are two ways to go, content-wise: If you're a Power Electronics artist, your lyrics should be about serial killers or sexual sadism exclusively. If you're a Dark Ambient artist, you'll need to find as many ways as possible of saying "I'm Angry and You Suck." Never, ever be any more specific than that. Ideally, your lyrics should scan like an explosion in a thesaurus factory.

Congratulations, you're a noise artist!

Welcome to the club! You're now on your way to becoming the top of the heap - the very best - and soon you'll have the undying admiration of whichever ten people in your town actually like this shit.

But not yet. In order to get all of the attention that you so desperately crave, you still have to do two things: put out product, and play a bunch of noise shows.

These are our subjects in the next two installments.

Recording
As I said in Part I, you don't have to be good to be a genius at noise. What - you think your average teenage noise fan knows the difference between a subtly crafted noise symphony recorded in a pro studio in excruciating detail, and a half hour of radio static that you taped on your sister's boombox while you left to take a shower? Do you really? Give me a fucking break.

A true noise musician must follow this maxim: quantity, not quality. Put out as many releases as you can, in every possible format and on whatever labels will have you. If people (or at least noise fans) see your name enough, they'll automatically assume that you're a genius in high demand - and since there's no such thing as "bad" noise, they'll automatically be right.

Don't have any idea of what you want beforehand. Don't rehearse. Don't record more than a single stereo track. Don't master anything. To a true noise musician, these are merely stopping blocks put in the way of his innate creative genius.

Starting A Label
It is an unwritten law that everyone who plays noise MUST run their own label. This is because your music is too "far-out" or "intense" to be on anyone else's label (always refer to this as being too extreme for/unhappy with/ignored by the "usual channels"). It's certainly NOT because nobody else would ever want to release this shit.

Though your label exists only as an excuse to put out your own material, hide the fact by putting out one or two releases by someone else. Make sure this "someone else" also has his own label, so that they'll be forced to cross-promote your product as well. If this "someone else" is foreign, all the better to open up that lucrative European or Japanese market (it has to be better, because as we all know, all Americans have bad taste in everything).

For the truly bold, you can start a magazine or a webzine based on the label. In it, you simply review your own products, interview yourself and maybe whatever other artists are on your roster, and run ads for your own releases. Webzines are easier and cheaper, but a paper zine has two distinct advantages: you can make money by selling whatever ad space is left over; and you can actually charge money for it. Don't worry about punctuation, legibility, content, or copyright issues. It may be more complicated for the Philistines, but in the world of noise, running a magazine is like making music: it doesn't have to be good, it just has to be a product.

Packaging
The packaging is where it's at for any noise release. I mean, noise fans have to have some reason for buying your product. In all seriousness, you could put out a totally blank LP, people would listen to the needle noise and hail it as a work of genius provided it was released on marbled vinyl in a limited-edition hand-painted sleeve.

Absolutely nothing you release should be in a regular jewel case. Every single package should be hand-built, preferably including random objects or biological waste. An added bonus is that if a record store somehow agrees to carry the release, it'll have to be kept behind the counter, adding to its percieved collectability. Ideally, you should be forced to destroy the package in order to listen to the music.

Always release everything on casette tapes, even though they're expensive, time-consuming to reproduce, and sound like shit. That's the way everyone did it in the mid-80's, and remember that you're trying for underground credibility here. If it turns out that people may actually like these, you can always release them later on CD-R. Or, better yet, on vinyl. If you DO save up enough for vinyl, make sure to demand the mastering engineer put the entire 70+ minutes onto one LP.

Small print runs are best, especially in weird numbers (say, 41). Hand-number each copy. In another year, after nobody has bought any, start selling them on eBay as "Ultra-Rare Limited Edition" releases at irregular intervals for the suckers who collect this crap. (Make sure you include vaguely similar but better-known artists in the item's description.)

Distribution
There are three, and only three, possible ways you can distribute your product:

1. Mail order.
2. Setting up a table at shows.
3. eBay.

Any other methods of distribution are a total waste of time.

If someone - again, hopefully in Europe - agrees to "distribute" your shit (invariably using the same methods as above), you should take it as a sign that it's okay to sell his. Tack on a couple of bucks per item, so that if by blind chance his records actually sell, you can rake in the dough.

And in a couple of years - after you're in debt, knee-deep in perpetually upcoming releases, behind schedule, and so sick of noise that you can't even do your laundry because of the sound the washing machine makes - you can cut off all communication with your artists and customers, then skip town with all their cash.

Whether you're booking a live show or merely playing one, there is one cardinal rule to remember:

It's always the venue's fault.

Remember, it's your God-given right to do whatever the fuck you want. Those goddamn club owners should be begging you to lick your fucking boots.

Promotion
There are only two ways to promote a show: email lists and flyers. Since this is the only way people will hear about the show, follow these tips for maximum efficiency.

Always spam every email list that's even vaguely connected to noise music - avante-garde, hardcore, black metal, techno, all record label lists, and all the lists of famous noise artists. (You've probably been using them to promote your label, anyway.) Emails should be sent in HTML that is so poorly formatted that you have to use the scroll bars to read a single sentence. You should either write entirely with the caps lock on, or without touching the shift key at all, and never use punctuation. Don't forget to send a full-size, print-resolution copy of your flyer with every email.

Speaking of flyers... There are basically two methods of producing flyers. The first is to photocopy a violent or pornographic image until it looks like a Rorschach test (or, better yet, use someone else's copyrighted artwork), then simply scribble the band names on it in black magic marker. The other method is to spend two weeks rendering it on the computer using Photoshop, then pay lots of money to color copy it onto glossy stock, even though you're only going to hang five copies on telephone poles within a two-block radius of your house the day before the show. (The former is the usual method for Harsh Noise artists who couldn't play their instruments well enough to be punk rockers.)

Performing
Remember: Your creativity is the supernova that the entire universe revolves around. If it wasn't for you, the show wouldn't even be happening, so you have the right - nay, the duty - to be an asshole. You're a genius, dammit, and you have an innate right to perform wherever and however you like.

Never promote the show - that's the booking agent's job. Always demand that your friends get in for free, even though they're the only ones that ever come to your shows. Don't worry about being on time, and throw a shit fit if you have to go on first. If the venue is a bar, demand free drinks for you and your friends for the entire evening. Bring enough gear to cover four tables. Always take at least an hour to set up, and refuse to play if the sound guy doesn't turn you up loud enough to be heard the next town over.

Different genres of noise demand different performances. If you're a Pile of Junk artist, you should always try to destroy everything in the entire venue, starting with other peoples' equipment and ending with the PA; be especially destructive if you're the opening act. If you're a Harsh Noise artist, your performance should consist of you sitting behind your effects pedals and turning knobs (remember, the quality of your music is directly proportional to the amount of knobs you turn). Try not to move a muscle during the entire set, and play for at least forty minutes. Power Electronics and Dark Ambient groups usually consist of a vocalist and one or more synth players. Vocalists: scream a lot and look real angry - don't worry about remembering any of the words, since nobody will understand them anyway. Synth players: see Harsh Noise, above.

Booking a show
When dealing with a venue, always keep in mind that everyone who works there is an ignoramus who has absolutely no appreciation for art or culture. Anything that requires an I.Q. above room temperature will be utterly lost on these creeps. To top it off, they're only interested in money, not in the moral obligation to support the ten-person elite that makes up your scene.

So don't be afraid to lie to them. Don't tell them it's a noise show. Double the estimated crowd size, both to the venue and the noise artists. If you have a drunken conversation with the booking agent and she tells you a date might be open, then your show is confirmed for that date. Always start at least an hour later than you're supposed to, and never end on time.

Noise musicians should only play with other noise musicians. The best idea is to have a festival - it's only logical that thirty noise artists will bring in thirty times as many people as one noise artist. Send all the artists a single email a month before the show, then claim they're playing even if they never confirm, especially if they're the headliners.

And when half the artists cancel, the performances suck, nobody shows up, and everyone loses money, just remember that it's always the venue's fault.

Polarized 3-D is ideal but expensive. It's also impractical, unless 3-D IMAX theaters are willing to start screening experimental films or I'm willing to lug two high-priced projectors everywhere I want to screen my work.

RV'll continue making anaglyph and Pulfrich videos until polarized ones are more feasible, lest stereoscopic perception be squandered.
